It begins with an in-depth discussion of the sacrificial system, explaining the laws of sacrifices as well as their reason. Also included is a detailed description of the daily service as practiced in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The narrative begins with the completion of the Tabernacle, and its dedication. We then read the story of the eighth day, when divine fire ignited the altar. This great celebration was marred by tragedy, when Aaron's two sons, Nadav and Avihu, offered \"strange fire\" and were killed. The reasons behind this tragedy are discussed in detail. It is this section of the Torah that deals with the laws of kashruth. Forbidden and permitted animals are described, and reasons are described, and reasons are given for the various rules. There is also a rather complete discussion of the prohibition against eating blood. This includes a digest of all the laws involving salting meat. As in previous volumes, the author presents the most complete treatment of the subject ever provided in a non-Hebrew text. Another highlight of this volume is the Yom Kippur Service. The text then delves into the laws involving Cohen-priests, and the various fine points about the sacrificial system. This book is also noteworthy for one of the most extensive discussions of the Jewish holidays in any English source. The book begins with the census of the Israelites, describing the camp and the selection of the Levites as a special dedicated tribe. The narrative then goes into the Israelites' first journey from Sinai, and the various times they tested the Divine Presence in the desert. A highly significant section of this volume deals with the Spies who were sent to explore the Holy Land before the occupation. The narrative tells how the spies brought back a bad report, and how, as a result of the Israelites' lack of faith, it was decreed that they spend forty years in the desert. The long-term ramifications of this event are discussed in detail. As in all volumes of The Torah Anthology, there are a number of important concepts that are discussed in this volume in detail. First, and most important is the concept of repentance. The author teaches us how to repent, and how repentance is most effective as a means of eradicating sin. The subject matter ranges from a lengthy treatment of the laws of idolatry to halachot that involve and effect each Jew on a daily basis-the laws of Birkat HaMazon, Tefillin and Tefillah. Also covered fully are such fundamental principals of Judaism as the role and function of suffering in this world, the system of tithing (including the tithing of monetary income), and an exposition of permitted and forbidden foods. The principals of prophecy and the methods of distinguishing a false prophet from a true one are enumerated, as are the laws dealing with the three major festivals. The last Sidra, Shoftim-\"Magistrates,\" deals with those institutions-monarchy, the judiciary and its enforcement arm-which provide a structure for the community to realize its role as a \"kingdom of priests and a holy nation\" The volume concludes with an exposition of the laws of warfare and Eglah Arufah. Joshua is appointed Moses' successor, the sublime poetry of the Song of Ha'azinu and Moses' final blessing to the tribes is set down. Of these books, the Book of Joshua is unique in that, as the Talmud states: \"Had the Jewish people not sinned, they would have received only the Five Books of Moses and the Book of Joshua.\" In this sense, this book is a completion of the Torah. It tells of the fulfillment of G-d's promise to Abraham, \"To your descendants I have given this land\" Had the Jews proceeded faithfully in their holy mission, the Bible, at this point, would have been complete. Lest anyone think that the Book of Joshua is little more than a historical account of military stratagems and the division of the spoils among the victors, the Me'Am Lo'ez Anthology reveals the true nature of the conquest: a spiritual triumph of the first order! It records something of far greater significance: the relationship between the Jewish people, newly settled in the land, and the Lord. The period of the Judges is a dark one in Jewish history, with a recurring pattern of the Jews straying after the gods of the heathens, followed by divine chastisement. Since that time, God continued to care for and guide the Jewish people. But this is not always as obvious as it was in those early days. He hides His face, and we see neither the reward of righteousness nor the punishment of evil. We are liable to become confused, and doubt His own presence. This volume covers a period of fifty-some-odd years during which the Israelite nation passed from the leadership of judges, the last one being Samuel himself, to the leadership of kings. Beginning with Samuel's birth and tutelage under Eli the High Priest, the book goes on to detail the major events of the next half century, most of which Samuel, as G-d's prophet and trustworthy messenger, played an important role as one of the greatest Jewish leaders of all times. But Scripture conceals at the same time as it reveals. What was so special about the way Channah pleaded with G-d that made her the classical example of how we have to pray? How did the captured Ark of the Lord return on its own? How and why was Saul chosen as Israel's first king? Was David's slingshot victory over Goliath just a fluke? What was the real reason Saul pursued David so relentlessly? Why is the relationship between Jonathan and David seen as the paradigm of all altruistic love? For Jewish tradition teaches us the proper way to view tragedy is not only in relation to past conduct but as a lesson in future hope: the deeper the misfortune, the greater the salvation to come. We learn this from the drama of Creation, in which darkness preceded light. Later, the darkness of Egyptian slavery preceded the light of the exodus and the giving of the Torah. Many tragedies befell the Jewish people on the day of the Ninth of Av, the Day of Lamentations, but also the day on which the Mashiach was born. Both Holy Temples were destroyed, with all the evil that accompanied those calamities. The Jews were expelled from Spain on that day. But the appropriate way to study the Book of Eicha as a link between despair and hope, between darkness and light, and also realize our negative actions that allowed such events to take place. This edition of Me'Am Lo'ez Eicha will enable the reader to understand that link in all its dimensions. It contains an introduction containing all the laws and customs regarding the Ninth of Av and the Three Weeks. It also contains several appendices detailing the events leading up to both Destructions. But it is also a key to what Torah Torah and mitzvot are all about. How and why this is so brilliantly brought out in the Torah Anthology on Koheleth. Rather than plowing through the many difficult texts, the reader enjoys the story as presented by these great masters. He hears Haman's fierce denunciation of the Jews, as well as Esther's passionate plea for her people. As in the case of most Talmudic tracts, every word here is charged with meaning, and innumerable scholars have struggled to understand the full meaning of the text. It is therefore not surprising that over 200 commentaries have been written on Avot. Of all the many commentaries written on Avot, perhaps the clearest is that written some 200 hundred years ago by Rabbi Yitzchak Magriso as part of the famed Me'Am Lo'ez series. Rather than burden the reader with many obscure and often contradictory explanations, the author immediately ferrets out the root meaning of the text, and presents it in a clear, unambiguous language. Tales, parables, and ethical discussions round out this text to produce a clear and highly readable book. It can be safley said that no other book explains text of Avot as lucidly. Literally hundreds of editions have been printed with almost as many as different commentaries. Still, no justification is required for this edition, which contains a translation of Rabbi Yaakov Culi's famous MeAm Loez on the Haggadah. No author is as able to extract, and present it so as to appeal to the most advanced scholar as well as to the person with virtually no background. The Haggadah text here follows the Sephardic rite, found in the first edition of MeAm Loez on Exodus. For the benefit of Ashkenazim using the volume, Ashkenazic variations are also included where they are significantly different. This also affords the opportunity for comparison.
