Poverty and primitive facilities could not diminish the joys and warmth of her Jewish environment and the thrill of a blossoming education. Even the worsening anti-Semitism of the Poles in the years before the war, could not dampen young Mala's exuberance and joie de vivre. Then war struck like a bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky, and Mala's idyllic child's world disintegrated. Because of her blonde hair and blue eyes and her fluency in the Polish language, Mala was able to slip away from the ghetto and forage for food for her starving family.
But one day, upon returning from one of her forays, she discovers the ghetto surrounded and its people being herded off for deportation. From this point on, until the end of the war, Mala is alone. Alone in the Forest is the story of Mala's survival in the hostile world of Polish peasants, villagers and forest people. It is a story of resourcefulness, audacity and extraordinary heroism but it is also a story of excruciating loneliness. Torn away from the embrance of her family and all contact with Jewish people, Mala often images that she is the last Jew on earth. Yaakov Astor shows that Hashem’s guiding hand in history, while often not obvious, and all the less so in the unfathomable tragedies of the Holocaust, is there to be found nonetheless. The tragedies and triumphs of the Jewish people are not isolated events but part of a continuum, with every detail orchestrated by Hashem for our ultimate benefit. This Hungarian Jew was branded a Nazi collaborator by Academy Award–winning screenwriter Ben Hecht in his 1961 book, Perfidy. But more recently Kasztner has been exonerated by Israel's Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem. After 400,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 1944, Kasztner, a point man in a goods-for-blood deal with Nazi henchman Adolf Eichmann, arranged for a train to carry 1,684 Jews from Hungary to Switzerland, wealthy Jews paying $1,500 per person while the poor paid nothing. For $100 a head, Eichmann kept an additional 20,000 Jews alive in Austrian labor camps. After the war Kasztner relocated to Israel, where in 1952 he was accused of being a Nazi collaborator who saved a privileged few at the expense of thousands of others. Kasztner sued for malicious libel and lost on most counts; the trial made international headlines; and Kasztner was assassinated in 1957 by right-wing extremists. Although a well-researched counterbalance to Hecht's account, Porter's defense may swing too much in favor of Kasztner, given that most of the participants are deceased and much of the evidence is anecdotal. Readers, however, will welcome the opportunity to debate the ever-relevant moral issues of doing business with the enemy. Illus. 16 pages of b&w illus., 3 maps. This
was one aspect of the Commission’s endeavor to provide historians with
insight into the inner lives of the Jews in Nazi-controlled Europe.
Kaplan’s main goal was to document for posterity the vast popular
cultural activity that flourished in Nazi Europe, despite the increasing
persecution and annihilation of the Jews. This volume is a unique
collection of poems, jokes, popular expressions, proverbs, slogans,
common curses, secret codes, and more that were devised by Jews in the
camps and ghettos as a way of coping with the harsh reality. The terms
and sayings reflect the Jews’ attitudes toward the Nazi oppressors and
their collaborators and demonstrate the resilience of the Jewish spirit
against all odds.

Edited by David Silberklang

Yad Vashem Studies is an academic journal featuring articles on the
cutting edge of research and reflection on the Holocaust. Yad Vashem
Studies is a must for any serious library seeking to offer the essential
texts on the Nazi era and the Holocaust. “Yad Vashem Studies has been
at the forefront of research into the Nazi persecution and mass murder
of the Jews, its origins and its consequences… indispensable for
researchers and teachers alike. David Silberklang, as editor, has
displayed a remarkable talent for balancing the output of grizzled
veterans with the challenging findings of younger researchers… No
library that purports to offer students and teachers the essential
historical texts on the Nazi era and the fate of the Jews can afford to
be without Yad Vashem Studies.” [David Cesarani, The Journal of
Holocaust Education]. Beginning with volume 35, Yad Vashem Studies
comes out twice annually, in spring and fall, making our contributors’
important research available to our readers more quickly and more
readily. Based on a vast quantity of official and personal documents, it describes the elaborate medical system that the Jews established in the ghetto to cope with the lethal conditions imposed on them by the Nazis, and the tragic ethical dilemmas that the medical teams confronted under German occupation. The book traces within a broad historical context the actions of the approximately 800 brave Jewish physicians, nurses, and other practitioners who strived to maintain the health of the Jewish population while risking their lives fighting two wars--against the Nazis and the death sentence that they imposed on the ghetto residents; and against the spread of epidemics. At the same time that the medical personnel contended with daunting professional and ethical challenges, they miraculously managed to conduct unique research on the diseases that they treated, and also to establish an underground medical school to train a new generation of Jewish physicians at great personal risk. In this pioneering study, Miriam Offer examines the unparalleled phenomenon of the establishment of the Jewish medical system in the Warsaw ghetto and in other ghettos during the Holocaust, and proposes historical explanations for its unique characteristics, shedding light on an important yet relatively unexplored subject that will be of great interest to both the medical

Economic Aspects of the Italian Race Laws (1938-2018)

Within the framework of Holocaust Studies, Italy did not always receive the attention it deserves. One of the unique aspects of the fascist anti-Semitic campaign that influenced the scope and harshness of the actions against the Jews is its length; it went on for seven years, making it second in duration only to that in Nazi Germany. From the late summer of 1938, while the country was still at peace, to the fall of 1943, the fascist authorities alone ordered and oversaw discriminatory regulations-excluding Jews from the economic life of the country, expelling them from the workplace, restricting their property, and generally limiting their political and civil rights. In this important study, Ilaria Pavan carefully analyzes the economic aspects of Jewish persecution and the community's struggle before, during, and after World War II. She exposes the persecutory intentions and mechanisms of the Italian regime and discusses the long series of provisions, decrees, and laws that severely afflicted the Jewish community. The diligent and rigorous application of the rules by officials and bureaucrats, including the expropriation of houses, businesses, and land, as well as their exclusion from workplaces and professions, and then, during the period of 1943-1945, the confiscation and looting of personal possessions, left the Jews shattered. Moreover, even the conclusion of the war did not provide the anticipated relief. For Italian Jews, the road to reintegration and the return of seized properties was long and difficult, characterized by contradictory and insufficient laws, lack of empathy by clerks, and general indifference to the violations suffered in the long years of persecution. Based on many sources-government documentation, letters, and survivors' memoirs-Pavan depicts in detail both the persecution and the reintegration stages, and devotes ample space to the voices of the victims.

A haunting novel of medieval intrigue and Jews caught up in the currents of history.
