Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm (1927–2020) was a preeminent rabbi, scholar, and leader of Modern Orthodoxy. He studied under his maternal grandfather, Rabbi Yehoshua Baumol, author of Emek Halakha, and under Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik at Yeshiva University, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1948 and earned his PhD from the Bernard Revel Graduate School in 1966.

As rabbi of Manhattan’s Jewish Center, he gained renown for his eloquent sermons, which combined intellectual depth with religious inspiration, establishing him as a leading orator and scholar. In 1976, he became the third president and Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshiva University, revitalizing its academic and financial foundations while championing the integration of Jewish tradition and secular knowledge.

His halakhic expertise was exemplified in his earlier volume, Halakhot vaHalikhot (1992), a testament to his analytical depth and mastery of Jewish law. Rabbi Lamm authored many other influential works, including Faith and Doubt, Torah Lishmah, and Torah uMadda, shaping Modern Orthodoxy for generations. He passed away in 2020, leaving behind a transformative legacy of leadership, scholarship, and a vision for Modern Orthodoxy that continues to inspire today.
