In the three years since October 7, a profound transformation has taken place across the eastern expanses of the “Route of the Patriarchs,” also known as Highway 60. Dozens of young settlement outposts, from northern Samaria to the southern Hebron Hills, have created a new political reality, dramatically changing the balance of fear between Jews and Palestinians. “The fear has switched sides.”
During the spring and summer of 2026, Rabbi Benny Lau and his partners undertook an inward and searching journey along the entire route. They held personal conversations with settlers living on farms and hilltops, as well as with their Palestinian neighbors.
The Way of the Patriarchs tells the story of that journey. It doesn’t offer answers; instead, it presents a picture that leaves us with questions: What kind of Israel do we want to be? What vision of Israel’s Zionist and liberal character do we hold before us?
Rabbi Benjamin Lau heads Bevo’ah Center—“Judaism That Sees the Human Being.” For this journey, he brought in Neta Pulitzer and Raz Kons-Rozanek, two friends and Jerusalem social activists who work extensively along the seam line between Jews and Palestinians. Tiferet Uria joined during the writing, and together they created the story of this journey.
