This commentary was supposedly prompted by the author wishing to commemorate his father who had lost his right hand while performing an act of Kiddush hashem, steadfastness in observing Jewish law against all odds… The contemporary consensus is that his work was written in Northern France during the middle of the 13th century. It appears that he had three objectives in writing this commentary. 1) Collecting excerpts of commentaries of the peshat. He claims to have referred to about 20 of such commentaries, although he does not mention many of its authors by name. 2) To Explain Rashi’s commentary , which already in his time enjoyed super-commentaries. 3) To write his own independent commentary. His commentary was first published Venice in the year 1524. The editor used the Hebrew edition by Mossad Harav Kook, beautiful annotated by Rabbi Chaim Dov Chavell.
