Rabbi Yaakov Ha-Levi Molin of Mainz(   -1427), known as the Maharil was the greatest German Jewish Sage of his generation and ranks among the greatest halachic authorities whose decisions still affect our current religious life.

The Maharil is also accepted as the authority on customs. The tradition of his masters in Germany and Austria as well as the customs of communities in other countries, which he visited, were meticulously observed by him.
