Harav Mordechai Schwab was a person of rare spiritual quality, even in a generation of spiritual giants. His avodas ha’mussar was legendary, and his ahavas Yisrael was a true expression of his soul. Within the pages of this volume, Reb Mordechai’s timeless words of mussar live on, expressing his greatness of spirit, his warm character, and his sensitivity toward others.
Particularly captivating are his first-hand accounts of the Torah and mussar from his rebbeim: Rav Baruch Ber Lebowitz of Kaminetz, Rav Yerucham Levovitz of Mir, and Rav Yechezkel Levenstein of Mir and Ponevezh, as well as the revered Gadol of the generation, the Chafetz Chaim. The personalities of these Torah and mussar giants come to life for us, engraving their lessons upon our hearts.
For over two decades, the Hebrew edition, Maamar Mordechai, has been a mussar classic for those who seek inspiration in their avodas Hashem—in batei midrashim, classrooms, and homes. Now, with the publication of The Shmuessen of Rav Mordechai Schwab, it is finally available in English for the wider public.
Rabbi Asher Schwab is a grandson of Harav Mordechai Schwab, zt”l. For over two decades, through his publications and lectures, Rabbi Schwab has dedicated himself to disseminating his grandfather’s mussar and that of his grandfather’s famous teachers, Gedolei Yisrael of the pre-Holocaust European Torah world. Over twenty years ago, Rabbi Schwab published the original three-volume set of his grandfather’s shmuessen, Maamar Mordechai. Fifteen years later, he reprinted Maamar Mordechai in a one-volume masterpiece that went through an immediate reprinting. At that time, he was inspired to begin the translation of Maamar Mordechai into English to benefit the wider Torah community. This volume results from that effort. Rabbi Schwab serves as Menahel of Yeshiva Degel Hatorah in Monsey, New York.
