This volume concludes the book of Numbers (BaMidbar) of The Torah Anthology. It begins with the insurrection of Karach, describing in vivid detail the passions displayed and the long-term consequences of this event. Further internal discontent then results in Moses "striking the rock" - and forfeiting his right to enter the land of Israel. Major sections of the book deal with important concepts and laws. With incomparable clarity it discusses the law of the Red Heifer and its esoteric meaning, the practice and symbolism of sacrificial offerings on the festivals, laws of inheritance, the laws of vows and their importance. This volume highlights the story of Balaam, who, as a prophet of the nations, pitted his will against the power of the Jewish people. The narrative tells how, notwithstanding his hatred, he finally comes to extol and bless this nation, his words charting for all time its unique destiny. The death of Aaron is described in the early part of the book, and towards the close there is the appointment of Joshua to succeed Moses. The book concludes with the record of the final journeys and establishment of the Cities of Refuge. Translated by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan.
